What are combination machines?

What are combination machines?

So you've heard of combination machines but what are they?

Most commonly, combination machines are usually a mix of a sewing machine and an embroidery machine. These computerised machines have two 'brains' and depending on how they are set up, it determines what function it performs.

If you are new to embroidery then the basic principal of the combination machine is - if you have the embroidery module connected it will do embroidery functions and if you don't have it connected it will be a sewing machine function.

There are also combination machines in the world of overlockers and cover stitch machines. These machines can be converted to achieve either overlocking or cover stitching.

What are the benefits of having a combination machine?

The most obvious answer is - space! If you do not have a huge amount of space for multiple machines , then combination machines are ideal. When in sewing mode , it is only the embroidery module that needs to be stored away. Having a combination machine enables you to expand your sewing skills and opens you to a whole world of projects.

Overall cost. If you were to purchase two separate machines , one sewing and one embroidery, of equal caliber it would cost more overall. For example if you purchased a Brother F540 embroidery machine and F560 sewing machine this comes to £2,098. If you were to get the F580 combi machine this is £1,699, saving you £399.

They are great for beginners, to either sewing or embroidery. Some people start out their sewing journey with machine embroidery and some start with sewing. Combination machines give you the ability to experiment and learn a new sewing skill. If you are a bear maker you can easily add little personalisation with a combination machine. Or if you a dress maker and want to add unique touches to garments.
